This Christmas Tree Blessing Milestone Moment can be used to celebrate setting up the Christmas tree during the Season of Advent. Blessing the Christmas tree provides an opportunity for family and friends to celebrate God’s creation and enjoy the beginning of the Advent season. The custom of an indoor Christmas tree was introduced in Germany in the 16th century. Legend tells us that the evergreen was chosen and decorated with candles to represent God’s creation and the gift of God’s Son as the Light of the World. The tradition is continued today in most homes.

This Easter Egg Blessing Milestone Moment can be used to celebrate and share the message of Christ’s resurrection with family, friends, and neighbors. Historically, eggs have been associated with new life, rebirth, and springtime. Decorating Easter eggs and hiding them for an Easter egg hunt has been a fun tradition for many a family gathering. Shrove Tuesday signals the end of Epiphany on the church calendar. It comes the day before Ash Wednesday. This day is also called Fat Tuesday and Pancake Day. In Germany and German American areas of the United States, it is known as Fastnacht Day. In France it is called Mardi Gras which means Fat Tuesday. Gathering for fun to eat pancakes and all things fattening on Shrove Tuesday has been a Christian tradition since the 16th century. It combines repentance and preparing for the Lenten season with a festive spirit. The modern St. Patrick’s Day observance which is held around the world on March 17th started in 1631 when the Church established a feast day to honor St. Patrick who had been a Patron Saint of Ireland. It is a time when people gather together and celebrate the missionary life of St. Patrick, the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and the heritage and culture of the Irish. This Saint Patrick’s Day Milestone Moment provides the opportunity for family and friends to celebrate and discuss the missionary heritage passed on by St. Patrick and what it means to us.

The modern U.S. holiday of Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November each year. It is a holiday celebrated by many countries around the world. For example, Canadian Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October, directly connected with the fall harvest and giving thanks for God’s providence. This Thanksgiving Day Milestone Moment provides an opportunity for family and friends to have meaningful conversations and give thanks to God on this special day.

Valentine’s Day occurs every February 14. People around the world celebrate by exchanging greeting cards, candy, flowers, and gifts. Christians honor Saint Valentine, who some say was a Roman Priest who performed secret weddings for soldiers forbidden to marry by the Roman Emperor Claudius II. Saint Valentine wore a ring with a Cupid on it—a Roman symbol of love—that helped soldiers to recognize him. He also handed out paper hearts to remind Christians of their love for God.

Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is observed annually on November 11 in the United States to remember and honor military veterans. President Woodrow Wilson celebrated the first Armistice Day in 1919 to mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Congress renamed Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all who have served in the military.
This Veteran’s Day Milestone Moment provides a time to honor and show appreciation for veterans who have played a role in protecting our freedom and affirm God as our source of hope and comfort.

The longest night happens twice a year at the winter solstice. In the northern hemisphere it occurs around December 21 and in the southern hemisphere it happens around June 21. The winter solstice occurs when one of the Earth’s poles has its maximum tilt away from the sun.
For Christians, the longest night is traditionally a day to show love and concern for friends and family members who are struggling with darkness and grief over losing loved ones. In the northern hemisphere it is sometimes referred to as “Blue Christmas” as it occurs two to three days before Christmas. It is an occasion to reflect on and remember God’s love for us as we support and reassure those who are dealing with grief during this time of year.

Candlemas Day, or the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, is celebrated on February 2nd each year. Candlemas is a traditional Christian festival that commemorates the ritual purification of Mary forty days after giving birth to Jesus as required by Jewish law. On this day, Christians also remember the presentation of Jesus by Joseph and Mary at the Temple in Jerusalem. Christians hold Candlemas Day as a day of purification, renewal, and hope.
It is a Christian tradition to light beeswax candles and eat crepes (thin pancakes) to celebrate Candlemas. In addition, Snowdrop (Galanthas Nivalis) flowers are known as Candlemas Bells because they bloom early in the year. Independence Day is held in the United States on the 4th of July each year. It provides a special time for family and friends to be thankful for the freedom we have been given in this country and for our freedom to worship as we choose.

The Juneteenth National Independence Day is held in the United States on the 19th of June each year. This Juneteenth Milestone Moment provides an opportunity for family and friends to gather to celebrate June 19, 1865 when the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation was completed in Texas. It provides a special time for family and friends to be thankful for the freedom promised by the Emancipation Proclamation executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
